Planning and Promoting Measures and Policies for the Sustainable Development of the Electrical Machinery Industry
JEMA discovers various tasks and problems, and plans and promotes various measures and policies for the sustainable development of the electrical machinery industry. It contributes to the development of domestic and overseas power and social infrastructure, improving the industrial system, and improving the life of the people by improving the quality, technology and international competitiveness of Japan's heavy electrical machinery and white goods.
Providing Opinions and Making Policy Proposals for Various Government and Bureaucratic Measures and Policies
JEMA aggressively states its opinions and makes policy proposals to the government and bureaucracy from both Japanese and global points of view on matters including nuclear power energy and renewable energy problems, environmental problems such as preventing global warming, safety of household electrical appliances, and other important problems involving Japan. In addition, JEMA summarizes a list of requests with regard to annual tax revisions in order to get the government to review the tax system.
Promoting Awareness of Product Safety
JEMA promotes safety awareness and measures to prevent accidents to both consumers and manufacturers through various media (JEMA web site, newspaper advertisements, etc.). It is also spreading knowledge and awareness considering safety precautions for heavy electrical machinery. Furthermore, JEMA is also making proposals to and cooperating with the related national systems.Promoting Statistical and Market Studies
Based on government production trend statistics and JEMA's own statistical studies, JEMA compiles various types of statistics for production, shipment, export/import, orders, etc. of heavy electrical machinery and white goods. JEMA also promotes a wide range of statistical and market survey work, such as domestic and overseas market trend studies, providing timely related information, etc.
Publicity Activities
JEMA is involved in a wide range of publicity and PR activities, including making public various statistics such as the production, shipment and order statistics for electrical machinery, spreading knowledge about product and safety, disclosing information about energy and environmental problems, and announcing various business reports. It is also disclosing information about the conditions of Japan's electrical machinery industry and JEMA activities through its official publication "Denki" (monthly), various other publications and the JEMA web site. Furthermore, it tries to enhance the presence of Japan's electrical machinery industry through various lectures and seminars, and exhibitions.
Cooperating With and Supporting Technological R&D at the National Level
In addition to contributing to securing stable energy for Japan, energy conservation, global environmental preservation and other R&D at the national level, JEMA studies and analyzes technological trends in Japan and abroad, and publicizes this information. In fields where the creation of new industries is expected, JEMA is developing and proposing safety standards and methods of assessing performance, and helping to create an atmosphere that is open to technological development and expansion of technology through cooperation between government, industry and academia.
Promoting Stable Supply of Energy and Its Advanced Use
In order to secure a stable supply of energy for Japan and to help prevent global warming, JEMA is cooperating with related government agencies and other organizations to promote nuclear power generation and expand the use of renewable energy. At the same time, JEMA is promoting technological R&D and finding more advanced ways to use energy.
Preserving the Global Environment
With regard to the prevention of global warming, JEMA is promoting its voluntary action plan with other relevant electrical and electronics associations*1 to achieve the target for the first period of the Kyoto Protocol. In addition, JEMA is coordinating electrical and electronics industries’ position for Post-Kyoto issues and providing opinions to the government. JEMA is also promoting other environmental issues actively e.g., environmentally conscious design (ECD) and chemical substances management areas.

Promoting Energy Conservation
In addition to promoting the development and expanded use of energy-saving machinery (industrial distribution boards and transformers, refrigerators, rice cookers, microwave ovens, etc.) that are designated market-leading equipment under the Energy Conservation Act *2, JEMA is trying to provide accurate energy conservation information to users by informing them about superior energy saving home electrical appliances through the labeling system.
*2. Energy Conservation Act: Act concerning the Rationalization of Energy Usage.
Holding the System Control Fair (SCF)
With the backing of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and jointly with the Nippon Electric Control Equipment Industries Association (NECA), JEMA holds Japan's largest factory automation fair, the "System Control Fair," every other year. Cutting-edge FA systems and components are exhibited at this fair to show both domestic and overseas users the newest technology and products. In addition, JEMA is helping to train young researchers by having displays and awards for research results by students.
Promoting International Exchange
JEMA is promoting international exchange through the Federation of Asian Electrical Manufacturers' Associations (FAEMA) that is made up of the heavy electrical industry organizations of six Asian and Pacific regions (Japan, China, R.Korea, Taiwan, India and Australia), and through its relations with the industries and various organizations in the U.S., Europe and Asia. It is exchanging information and improving mutual understanding with these organizations to solve the problems that are common to all countries, such as energy problems, the global environment, international standardization etc.
Promoting International Standardization and Compliance Assessment Activities
In addition to establishing and maintaining the standards of the Japan Electrical Manufacturers' Association (JEM), JEMA participates in the deliberation and formulation of other standards, such as the Japan Industrial Standards (JIS), standards of other organizations, and international standards (IEC, ISO), in order to contribute to the improvement of quality and technology of electrical machinery. Furthermore, in addition to making sure that Japan's opinions are taken into account in international standards, JEMA is also promoting the creation and adoption of compliance assessment systems that are in accordance with international standards.
